I'm currently using Pamoorama (http://www.silverscripting.com/pamoorama/index.php ) on a couple of websites. It uses mootools, but I would prefer to use a jQuery based solution. jQuery Tools seems like it can almost do what I'd like, but I'm a designer not a programmer and I don't think I'd have the ability to hack it. Do people think it would be an easy task or not?

Nice plugin, but it doesn't really do the same thing. Pamoorama simply pans the image left or right when the user moves their mouse left or right. Have a look at the demo and you'll see what I mean:http://www.silverscripting.com/pamoorama/sample2.html
